Talesh

With an area of 291.9 sq. km. this county is bounded to Astara from north, the Caspian Sea from east, Khalkhal and Ardebil Mountains from west and Rezvanshahr County from south. Part of this county is mountainous and the other part is a plain between the mountain and the Caspian Sea. The four season nature of Talesh is very famous and is considered a class one tourist region in Iran for its beauties. Talesh County includes four districts: central, Asalem, Havigh, and Gorganroud, ten agglomerations: Asalem, Khalesara, Kharjgil, Havigh, Choubar, Khotbehsara, Lisar, Saheli, Joukandan, Toularoud, and Talesh mountainous and according to the national survey of 1375 the population is 180485. 44% of the population are Sunni and have a very god life with the Shiite residents. The coherence and unity of these religious sects and their family and social relationships manifests the worm-bloodedness and the supreme culture of the people in this region. The name Talesh is derivate from “tavalesh”. “Toul” means “mud” and “esh” is a suffix of place. The word means a place where there is a lot of mud. By the passage of time the word has changed into Talesh.  Tats and Taleshes are the main residents of this region and have a very ancient and strong culture and had an expensive role it the foundation of Gilan`s culture. Taleshes are the race which is called Kadousian or Katousian and from the Maad era they came to this region. In the past they were the dominant political power of the region. Their ethnic life in the mountains and valleys has been adjusted with the seasons, and they have kept this adjustment till now. Taleshi dialect is common in the plains and Galeshi dialect is common in the mountainsides.  In the agricultural section rice, tobacco, fruits and vegetables are the main crops of the region. The honeybee cultivation and the production of high-quality honey, keeping animals, growing animals, growing birds, fishing, silkworm cultivation and producing cocoons are other economic activities of this region. Socks weaving, Jajim weaving, and Shawl weaving from the sheep fur are the handicrafts of the region. It should be mentioned that three firms named The Chouka Wood Industry, Shafaroud and The Wood and Paper industry of Iran are active in this county.
